Step 1 of 9

Intestinal wind

What is intestinal wind?

The gas produced in the digestive tract can either by released through the mouth, via eructation, or through the anus as flatulence. It is a sign that the digestive tract is functioning well. We release between half a litre and 1.5 litres of gas every day.

What causes intestinal wind?

When bacteria break down fibre in the colon this produces gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane, as well as substances containing sulphur that are responsible for the odour that accompanies flatulence.
