Spallanzani made himself vomit and filled a glass tube with the liquid he had collected. He then placed cooked, chewed beef in the tube. After 35 hours, the meat had changed consistency.

What did Beaumont discover in the 19th century?


Beaumont was an American surgeon who experimented on a patient with a bullet wound that had left his stomach directly accessible. He extracted gastric juices from the patient to observe how digestion worked.

How was the current model of digestion discovered?

Digestive juices were identified in the early 20th century, establishing the fact that digestion is a series of mechanical and chemical transformations.
