Mechanical and chemical transformation

How does the digestive tract transform food?

Food undergoes mechanical transformation in the digestive tract to make the pieces of food smaller. When we use our teeth to break food down, this is a mechanical transformation.

The chemical transformation that follows is more effective on smaller particles than on bigger ones. Gastric juices, for example, can work better on food that has been chewed.
